ZONE DESCRIPTION: TORTOSENDO: The village of Tortosendo is a Portuguese parish and one of the 31 parishes in the municipality of Covilhã, with an area of 17.75 ksqm and about 5 624 inhabitants, of whom 20.52% are over 65 years old and 14.70% will be children and teenagers. Its population density is 317 inhabitants / ksqm. COVILHÃ Covilhã is a Portuguese city belonging to the district of Castelo Branco, in the province of Beira Baixa, statistical region of the Center and sub-region of Beiras and Serra da Estrela. The municipality of Covilhã is located in Cova da Beira (NUT III), Beira Baixa, Castelo Branco district, in central Portugal. Geographically the district is characterized by the several mountain ranges that cross it, namely: Serra da Estrela, Lousã, Gardunha, Malcata, Alvelos and Muradal. Covilhã borders on the north with the sub-region Cova da Beira and Beira Interior Norte, on the east with Spain, on the south with Spain and Alto Alentejo and on the west with Pinhal Interior Sul. It is the seat of a municipality with an area of 555.60 ksqm and 51,797 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 21 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipalities of Seia and Manteigas, to the northeast by Guarda, to the east by Belmonte, to the south by Fundão and to the west by Pampilhosa da Serra and Arganil. It is the land of the wool industry, of a worker nature, the birthplace of five hundred discoverers, today a city with a public university. The city of Covilhã is located on the southeastern slope of Serra da Estrela and is one of the most important urban centers in the region along with Coimbra, Aveiro, Viseu, Figueira da Foz, Guarda, Castelo Branco, etc. Its urban core extends between 450 and 800 m in altitude. The highest point in mainland Portugal, Torre (1993 m), belongs to the parishes of Unhais da Serra (Covilhã), São Pedro (Manteigas), Loriga (Seia) and Alvoco da Serra (Seia), being included in three municipalities: Covilhã, Manteigas and Seia, but it is about 20 km from the urban center of Covilhã, being Covilhã, therefore, the Portuguese city closest to the highest point of mainland Portugal. It has been a city with its own characteristics for centuries, simultaneously combining interesting facts from the Portuguese reality.
